Let's have 'clean' water protests

The water war has been an ugly one to date.

There has been widespread confusion about the introduction of water charges and the goalposts have been moved with deadlines lapsed.

Government ministers have admitted they made mistakes on the timeframe of implementing the new charge for households.

They have pledged time and again that the rates will be affordable.

They have promised to extend the water charges tax relief to ensure everyone is guaranteed €100 off their bill.

But for so many households, this is just not enough - less than 750,000 households have registered their details to date.

Today thousands will take to the streets in 90 separate marches to protest about the shambles that is Irish Water and they have every right to do so.

We have in the past seen clashes with protesters and Irish Water workers turn nasty.

Let's keep these peaceful protests as clean as possible.
