Interviewing Gay and Murphy

I interviewed Mike Murphy and Gay Byrne in the late 1990s. 'Unmemorable' barely comes close to describing these encounters, owing to my youth, inexperience and poor writing skills.

I found Byrne, of course, impossible to interview. Either he possessed no interior life or, cannily, the personality he wanted to project was that of a person with no interior life. And I wrote as much.

Mike Murphy, beneath a lot of bonhomie and talk about property, struck me as a little angry in our interview. And I wrote as much.

Both men loathed the results.

I mention this because the meetings in 1998 and 1999 coincided with their respective retirements from broadcasting and I was wondering had anybody heard what had become of them?
