The tedious political gamesmanship that marks the annual election of Dublin’s Lord Mayor has begun early this year.
Newly-elected independent councillors have refused to enter into a coalition with anyone unless their preferred choice - independent councillor Christy Burke (left) - is given the keys to the Mansion House.
And already, the former Sinn Fein activist has spelt out the policies that mark him out as a true man of the people.
“The homeless would be invited to dinner (in the Mansion House),” he explained.
“It would be fish and chips. I would keep it simple.”
And in so doing, Burke has got himself into the headlines.
But has it not occcured to him that by shoving fish and chips at those less fortunate than himself, he’s risks contributing to another social problem?
