Good luck on Junior Cert results
TODAY'S a big day for Junior Cert students -- and their families -- and we wish them all the very best of luck. Pupils will no doubt enjoy a well-deserved celebration of their results tonight.
Parents will hope they do so responsibly, and the vast majority no doubt will. As they get on with their celebrations, Education Minister Ruairi Quinn will be pouring over a worrying results card -- chiefly in the area of maths.
Less than half of Junior Certs are now sitting higher level maths. Not surprising, given just one in three teachers is qualified to teach it.
The subject is vital to drive our economic recovery, for careers in IT and the sciences -- the fabled 'knowledge economy'.
If other countries are producing better graduates investment, and jobs, are going to go to there. We need to pull our socks up -- and quick.
