FG is facing humiliation in Aras race

The latest presidential poll is a huge blow to Fine Gael. Their choice of candidate, Gay Mitchell, has failed to ignite public enthusiasm despite a long political track record and a high public profile.

His trailing second last in the race has to be taken as an indication to Enda Kenny that the people are looking for something different.

The Government party candidate faces the humiliating prospect of finishing well behind Sinn Fein's Martin McGuinness.

The anti-establishment stance is also underlined by the significant support for Sean Gallagher who, with no political affiliations, is drawing a considerable portion of the vote.

Michael D Higgins of course remains the clear favourite but Gallagher's high rating will give some pause for thought in his camp.
