Editorial: We've got freeze licked this time

The record-breaking cold November weather has not brought the nation to a halt this time. Thankfully, lessons from last winter's cold snap have been learned and local authorities and State agencies have shown themselves better prepared.

It is reassuring that large reserves of salt have been secured to help keep traffic flowing in the sub-zero days ahead.

People throughout Ireland are pulling together to help each other out.

It is a time for all to ensure that the elderly, the sick and the vulnerable in our midst receive daily contact and offers of assistance during this time of extreme weather.

Motorists must ensure they continue to drive with extreme care at this very dangerous time on the roads.

Whatever about current economic woes, it is heartening that communities in the grip of ice and snow are brought closer together during this weather emergency.
