Editorial: Tweets that catch cheats

SOCIAL networking websites are now being used to catch welfare cheats, as we reveal today. Often, public tip-offs prompt the Department of Social Protection to follow up leads on Facebook, Twitter and Bebo.

In the first eight months of the year, more than 3,000 tip-offs were phoned or mailed in.

We often hear of resistance to change in the public service, but that doesn't apply in this instance.

With social welfare fraud costing us €600m a year, it's in everyone's interest that we use every means to cut down benefit crime.
