Editorial: Quitting is only option for Brady
There is no doubt that Cardinal Sean Brady was sincere when he made his heartfelt apology over his role in the Fr Brendan Smyth child-abuse case.
But the time for words and apologies is now long past.
His failure to report Brendan Smyth to the civil authorities means that there is no other option but for him to step down.
It is the most honourable course of action open to him.
He has apologised to anyone who has been hurt by any failure on his part.
That was welcome.
But victims of abuse require that the hierarchy faces up to the mistakes that have been made in the past.
Cardinal Brady himself said that these are momentous times for the Church in Ireland.
It is standing at a crossroads and it must not let victims of abuse down again.
