Editorial: Presidential race is really hotting up
THE Presidential race hotted up today with a Government Minister's backing for a Fine Gael MEP seeking the party's nomination for the October election. Minister of State for European Affairs Lucinda Creighton told the Herald that she is supporting Gay Mitchell.
Her announcement came as Pat Cox declared he was also in the running for a Fine Gael nomination.
Another of the party's MEPs, Mairead McGuinness, is also running, which should lead to some interesting times in the party before its convention on July 9.
The party will now have to choose between three candidates with impressive experience in Europe and a record of impeccable service.
Potential independent candidates like David Norris and Mary Davis, are also seeking nominations.
The first intervention by a Government Minister has upped the tempo and emphasised that a real election is now underway.
