Editorial: Outrage of Church plea for abuse aid

It is absolutely staggering that any member of the Catholic Church would come cap in hand asking parishioners to help financially with compensation and legal bills arising out of clerical child abuse.

The Bishop of Ferns, Denis Brennan, has provoked outrage among abuse victims by his appeal for parishioners to pay €60,000 a year between them for 20 years towards compensation bills.

It is one thing to bail out the banks that were broke, but why should ordinary citizens be expected to pay out their hard earned money to help out the wealthy Catholic Church?

The suggestion has been made that the Vatican should be asked to pay, rather than the ordinary parishioners of Wexford, and that would make more sense to most people.

Let the Church first look to its own assets and wealth to pay what it owes before asking its congregation.
