Editorial: How many elderly are suffering?
THE Health Information and Quality Authority and the three staff members of Rostrevor House who disclosed the litany of abuse and irregularities at the Dublin nursing home are to be commended.
The revelations of elderly people being bloodied and bruised by their so-called carers is shocking in the extreme.
The very idea of a helpless old lady being brought by the same abusive attendant to the toilet only to be heard screaming should outrage us all.
But the real question is how many other Rostrevors are there out there?
The country has thousands of care facilities for the elderly and infirm. And there is no doubt that at this moment some mistreatment is taking place of some of the most vulnerable members of our society.
This abuse must be sought out by authorities or reported by care workers with extreme prejudice and those responsible prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
'Not knowing about it' is no excuse.
