Editorial: Final journey today for brave Brian
BRIAN Lenihan's final journey was marked today by a quite remarkable outpouring of public grief at his passing. Thousands of members of the public, together with senior figures from politics, the judiciary and the Government paid their respects.
It was a measure of how ordinary people regarded Mr Lenihan, who fought to save Ireland from financial collapse while engaged in a personal struggle for survival.
Today is not the day to focus on the controversies of the last government but it is one in which all can appreciate in some way the loss suffered by the Lenihan family.
His unstinting bravery, his good humour and his ability for the "common touch" will always be remembered.
His untimely death at the age of 52 has robbed the country of a hugely talented politician who still had so much to contribute.
Our sincere sympathies go out to his family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
