Editorial: Attacks add to Ahern's problems
A FATAL shooting and the stabbing of an innocent woman outside a church happened in less than 24 hours in Justice Minister Dermot Ahern's own backyard.
People are shocked by the unprovoked stabbing of Teresa Moore, as she visited the church in Drogheda on Saturday night.
And less than 24 hours later, a 42-year-old man was shot dead in Dundalk. While gardai are keeping an open mind, the victim is suspected to have had links to the Real IRA.
There are no similarities nor links between the attacks apart from the fact that both occurred in Minister Ahern's own constituency -- and come as gardai escalate their protests at cuts in pay, a situation Minister Ahern has failed to address.
There is little doubt that gardai will do all they can to make sure those responsible are found.
But it is clear that these crimes come at a difficult time for gardai, and for their boss Dermot Ahern.
