Criminals can't escape abroad now

THE massive policing operation mounted in Ireland, the UK and Spain this week has struck a blow to members of the criminal fraternity who think that by escaping to foreign climes they are untouchable.

The scale of the operation, which targeted money laundering activities linked to international drug trafficking, was fascinating.

More than 700 officers were involved in the operation, which was the culmination of two years of preparation.

This newspaper will continue to track what happens next as this global investigation unfolds. It looks like the ripple effects from this operation could last for years.

The police forces involved, and not least our own gardai, deserve great credit for their tenacity, while acknowledging that the good work must continue.

The developments this week have shown that international law enforcement cooperation can be highly effective in disrupting criminal organisations.

Long may it continue.
