Elber Twomey lost her husband, toddler son and unborn baby after a suicidal driver collided with their car while on holiday in Devon in 2012.
The death of her husband Con, aged only 39, their 16-month-old son Oisin and unborn baby Elber Marie after the horrific incident is, as the Cork coroner put it yesterday, “an unspeakable tragedy”.
The family had the misfortune to encounter taxi driver Marek Wojciechowski, who left a suicide note before taking to the road and deliberately serving into the path of their car.
Elber’s pain at the events of that day two years ago must be unbearable.
That she has now become a powerful voice for road safety and suicide risk awareness demonstrates courage above and beyond what could possibly be expected of someone who had to deal with such grief. Elber explains it in simple terms ,saying her campaign is “so no other family has to endure the terrible loss that I have suffered”.
