Wexford men won't starve in the Garden

O'BYRNE SHIELD SEMI-FINAL

WEXFORD v WICKLOW

(St Patrick's Pk Enniscorthy, Tomorrow 2.0)

AFTER the giddy excitement of the Micko years, Wicklow can expect far less headlines and hype under the homegrown stewardship of former Rathnew supremo Harry Murphy. And, who knows, maybe that's no bad thing.

TRICK

Which brings us to tomorrow's low-key derby in Enniscorthy. Wicklow battled back strongly against DCU to no avail, but had better luck against the students of Athlone IT, two extra-time goals eventually doing the trick.

Wexford have only played once this month, but the way they recovered from a slumbering start against Meath -- eventually losing by three -- suggests they might have enough in the January tank here.

ODDS: Wexford 4/6, Draw 15/2, Wicklow 11/8 VERDICT: Wexford

Laois to prevail

O'BYRNE SHIELD SEMI-FINAL

LAOIS v DIT

(Portarlington, Tomorrow, 2.0)

PERHAPS it's typical for this time of year -- or maybe it's just typical of those mercurial O'Moore men -- but it's hard to get a handle of Laois's formguide right now.

Starting with seven debutants against UCD, they crashed out of the O'Byrne Cup proper to a UCD side subsequently hammered by Dublin.

That four-point defeat didn't augur too promisingly for their Shield trip to Carlow ... and yet Laois ran out comprehensive seven-point winners despite the second-half dismissals of Billy Sheehan and goalscoring midfielder Peter O'Leary (to a second yellow).

DIT -- who lost heavily against Kildare before beating Westmeath by three points in the Shield -- don't look as formidable as last year's crew.

ODDS: Laois 8/13, Draw 15/2, DIT 6/4

VERDICT: Laois
