ALAN MULHOLLAND will hope to buck the trend of recent Galway football managers after he was installed in the Tribesmen hotseat last night.
Galway's last two appointments, Joe Kernan and Tomás Ó Flatharta, each lasted just a season in the post and Galway officials have responded by 'shopping local'.
Mulholland, 43, was the only candidate interviewed for the vacancy following several withdrawals.
The Salthill/Knocknacarra clubman brings a proven underage track record to the table, having guided Galway to the All-Ireland U21 crown this year as well as an All-Ireland minor title in 2007.
He will be assisted by his two U21 selectors, Tuam Stars' Alan Flynn and Donal Ó Flatharta from An Spidéal.
CENTRAL COUNCIL will next month initiate moves to amend a controversial GAA Congress decision that all senior championship games should be replayed without recourse to extra-time.
Director General Páraic Duffy claimed the association's fixture calendar could be thrown into "chaos" by the ruling, which they will seek to reverse at next year's Congress.
"I don't believe that motion is implementable because it would lead to fixture chaos," Duffy warned. "I'm not so sure what they'll do with the provincial championship but, in terms of qualifiers, I think there has to be extra-time.
"It will be on the agenda for the next Central Council meeting to look at the motion that was passed by Congress this year and see if we can seek an amendment at next year's Congress."
MARTIN CLARKE will not be available for the International Rules series against Australia, as the Down star prepares instead for his looming return to the AFL.
Anthony Tohill's management team had left the door open but are now resigned to being without Clarke, with the latest reports from Australia suggesting he could return to Collingwood via the draft system at the end of November.
JASON RYAN is poised to stay at the Wexford football helm for a fifth season, thereby quelling recent links with the hurling management vacancy in his native Waterford. "I'm meeting with Wexford officials (today) and hopefully we can sort something out in the coming days," said Ryan.
