Kildare contest fine of €5,000

THE cash-strapped Kildare county board will contest the proposed €5,000 fine levelled by Croke Park disciplinary chiefs arising from the half-time melee that marred the Lilywhites' NFL clash with Monaghan at Clones last Sunday.

Kildare chairman John McMahon confirmed that they will challenge the severity of the fine recommended by the CCCC, describing it as "severe" and "harsh".

"We don't condone the incident that happened, but we need to put the thing in context. It was a game played generally in good spirit," McMahon told the Evening Herald.

He also indicated that "to the best of my knowledge", Kildare selector Niall Carew would contest a proposed four-week ban. As for player Brian Flanagan's proposed one-match ban, the Kildare chief said: "It was a straight red, we just have to take our punishment for that."

Monaghan have also been hit with a proposed €5,000 fine for their role in the mass melee. "Monaghan county board are making absolutely no comment whatsoever," said secretary Seán McKenna.
