Boost for Dubs as Connolly is cleared
DIARMUID CONNOLLY has escaped any retrospective suspension for his challenge on Kildare full-back Ciaran Fitzpatrick during Dublin's O'Byrne Cup defeat to the Lilywhites nine days ago.
The Leinster competitions control committee reviewed DVD evidence of the challenge last night and decided it is "not proceeding any further with the case."
A TG4 replay of the incident showed Connolly's knee making contact with Fitzpatrick, who was lying on the ground at the time. The collision prompted an angry response from Kildare forward James Kavanagh and a wider melee ensued, before referee Eddie Kinsella brandished yellow cards to both Kavanagh and Connolly.
The Leinster Council has also refixed the O'Byrne Cup final between Kildare and DCU -- postponed last Sunday because of a waterlogged Newbridge pitch -- for Friday night, February 17, at O'Moore Park, Portlaoise.
Johnston move hits major snag
Seanie Johnston's proposed transfer to Kildare has hit a major snag after the Cavan county board refused to sign his application and raised serious questions over his residency.
