Youth nearly ran over garda

A TEENAGER who nearly ran over a garda while driving under the influence of cannabis has been remanded on continuing bail.

The 17-year-old sped through a garda checkpoint at the Nangor Road, in west Dublin, on January 31 last year.

The teenager has already pleaded guilty to "drug driving" and careless driving at Dublin Children's Court.

The case was adjourned until next month.



Hippo put out of her misery

Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo has put down its oldest animal -- a 47-year-old hippo named Gertie -- because of normal, age-related physical decline.

The hippo had lived at the zoo since 1966. She had osteoarthritis and despite medication, zoo officials say she was in pain.



Boy accused of cracking skull

A 16-YEAR-OLD schoolboy accused of fracturing a youth's skull with a golf club has been served with a book of evidence.

The teenager had been charged at the Children's Court with assault causing harm in north county Dublin in August last year.

The boy was served with a book of evidence yesterday in court. Judge Clare Leonard then made an order to send the case forward for trial.
