Work resumes on two bridges

The High Court has cleared the way for construction work to resume on two bridges in Kilkenny City.

Ms Justice Bronagh O'Hanlon rejected claims that works being carried out at the two sites over the River Nore amounted to unauthorised developments. She said there was no evidence of environmental damage where a new bridge was being constructed near Greens Bridge and where a new footbridge was being constructed beneath the Ossory Bridge at Nore Linear Park.

Pope 'will be safe in Albania'

The Vatican says it's not taking any extra security measures to protect Pope Francis during his weekend trip to majority Muslim Albania despite reports of Islamic militants returning from the Mideast.

Pope Francis would use the same open-topped vehicle he uses in St. Peter's Square when he greets crowds in the poor Balkan nation on Sunday. Francis has said he wanted to visit Albania to highlight the rebirth of Christianity that was brutally wiped out during communist rule, and to showcase how Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims are working together now to govern the country.

SS guard faces murder charges

A 93-year-old man has been charged with 300,000 counts of accessory to murder for serving as an SS guard at the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp.

Oskar Groening is accused of helping operate the death camp in occupied Poland between May and June 1944, when some 425,000 Jews were brought there and at least 300,000 almost immediately gassed to death. Prosecutors said among other things the former guard was charged with helping collect and tally money and valuables from the victims.

Holly bows out for baby No.3

TV chef Gino D'Acampo is to become a team captain on popular series Celebrity Juice - replacing Holly Willoughby while she is on maternity leave.

Italian D'Acampo will join quizmaster Keith Lemon and the other regular captain Fearne Cotton on the 12th series of the ITV2 show. Willoughby is expecting her third child.
