Work about to start on s15m bridge over Liffey
WORK will start in weeks on a new €15m bridge across the Liffey in Dublin city centre.
The bridge, linking Marlborough Street on the northside to Hawkins Street on the southside, will take 18 months to complete and the planned opening is spring 2013.
The bridge, which will be just downstream of O'Connell Bridge, will carry buses as well as the Luas and cyclists.
Graham Projects Ltd, from Hillsborough, Co Down, is the contractor. It has been hired for €5,906,291.
There will be up to 20 people working on site, but there will be more people involved off site in the supply of materials and head office back-up, according to the council.
It is to be paid for as part of the Public Transport Capital Expenditure programme for 2011, and while the project was due to begin in late 2009, it was delayed as a result of funding concerns. The construction is now set to start at the end of September.
It is hoped the bridge will transform a neglected area of the capital, opening up new retail opportunities.
