Woman soldier's battle for promotion
A corporal in the Defence Forces who has been graded as "outstanding" in leadership potential and general suitability for promotion to sergeant may instead be thrown out of the army.
Cpl Frances Flood, of Whitehills, Grangecon, Co Wicklow, told the High Court yesterday that after having been accepted as top-class material for a promotion course she had later been de-selected because of a change of rules.
Cpl Flood, in an affidavit, said she had been de-selected from the course on the basis the criteria had changed and her qualifications for entry had become outdated.
The court was told that if she doesn't reach the opportunity of achieving the rank of sergeant by the date she is 21 years in service she faces dismissal.
The judge granted her leave to challenge the ruling and directed she be given a place on the course.
