We've made it! World Cup joy for cricket stars
HERE we go again... to another world cup.
While our soccer boys might be the toast of Ireland during the European Championships this summer, our cricket heroes hope to own the autumn.
The squad has qualified for the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka in September and October
Now star player Kevin O'Brien, who celebrated with "a few beers" last night, has called on fans to get behind the team.
The lads landed back in Dublin on Sunday afternoon for a well-earned break, fresh from their victory in Dubai, having beaten Namibia and Afghanistan in the qualifiers.
"It was just more of a relief to know that we've qualified for one of those two spots in September," he said.
"It hasn't really sunk in. We had a few beers last night in the hotel to celebrate but we'll probably we taking it easy now over the next few days as we try to recharge the batteries.
The Railway Union player says he hopes that plenty of Irish fans will try to make the journey to Sri Lanka.
"There were lots of Irish people in India last year and hopefully there'll be a good few will be coming out to support us," he said.
He added that it was "great for the country" that Ireland had snatched a place in the tournament and that cricket was enjoying such a surge in popularity here.
"The numbers that are playing the game have increased a lot. If the game's on TV, and if there's big games that people can watch, the numbers will increase further."
