Weevils force recall of Dunnes Stores rice
Insect contamination has forced the recall of a batch of Dunnes Stores rice from shops across the country.
Weevils have been found in the batch of Easy Cook Rice which is part of the store's My Family Favourites range.
The 1kg packets have been removed from store shelves, but the public has been alerted to the problem by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI). Packs with the batch code 14 122 and a best-before date of May 2, 2016 are affected.
Dunnes is advising customers who have bought rice with the relevant batch number to return it to their local store.
A spokesperson for the FSAI said that even if the rice weevils did no harm to consumers' health, it was not acceptable to have them in products and they could carry other contamination.
Female rice weevils lay their eggs inside rice grains and their developing larvae feed from the inside until they are fully-grown and emerge.
As adult female weevils crawl out of the grains they are met by male weevils waiting to mate with them.
