We owe it to Shane to get gang thugs

The life sentence imposed on assassin Barry Doyle for the slaying of innocent Shane Geoghegan is to be welcomed. But there cannot be closure on this darkest of deeds where a man's life was taken away by a killer who mistook him for someone else.

Gardai need the full support of everyone as they pursue the other members of the gang who conspired in cold-blooded murder. Tragic Shane had run for his life from the gunman and had pleaded with Doyle with the words "Please stop."

Those words must echo around Ireland in a concerted effort to stop this evil cycle of killings.

Chief Superintendent John Scanlan has declared Doyle's accomplices will be brought to justice.

The people of Limerick united in solidarity and disgust after this heinous crime.

The nation owes it to Shane Geoghegan to ensure the gangland killers are stopped.
