Vomit bug puts 40 on trolleys in Beaumont
AN outbreak of the winter vomiting bug is putting strain on Beaumont Hospital where 40 patients were on trolleys yesterday.
The hospital is urging people who have the symptoms - severe abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea - not to visit the emergency department.
Beaumont has restricted visiting to help tackle the latest outbreak of the debilitating Norovirus which has spread rapidly since the end of last week and continues to affect the majority of wards.
A spokesman said yesterday that 53 patients were displaying symptoms of the virus.
Around 16 of these were new cases and a total of 22 beds had been closed in the wards affected.
He said visitors should come to the hospital on "only absolutely essential visits".
"Genuinely essential visits may only take place between 2pm and 4pm and between 6pm and 8pm. No children are being allowed to visit in any circumstances."
