US charges in German case

PROSECUTORS in New York City have brought charges against a man already held in Germany over the killing of two US airmen.

Kosovo Albanian Arid Uka is charged with murder, attempted murder and firearms offences. He is also facing murder and attempted murder charges in Germany.

The complaint says Uka (21), approached a bus on March 2 at Frankfurt airport and asked in English if it was carrying Americans. It says he then shot dead 25-year-old Senior Airman Nicholas Alden and 21-year-old Airman 1st Class Zachary Cuddeback. Two others were wounded.

Pilot blamed for river crash

US EXPERTS investigating a tour boat crash in Philadelphia that killed two Hungarian students have largely blamed the accident on a tug boat pilot talking on his mobile phone.

The National Transportation Safety Board found the mate was on his phone for 10 of the 12 minutes before the collision on July 7, which threw 37 people into a busy shipping channel.

He was using his phone and laptop during a family emergency, the board said.

Mexican crime lord captured

AUTHORITIES have arrested the leader of the cult-like La Familia cartel, saying they have dealt a blow to organised crime that terrorised Mexico.

Jose de Jesus Mendez Vargas, alias El Chango (The Monkey) was arrested in the state of Aguascalientes.

With the death of La Familia founder Nazario Moreno Gonzalez in December, federal security spokesman Alejandro Poire said Mendez was "the last remaining head of a criminal group responsible for homicides, kidnappings, extortion, corruption and cowardly attacks on the authorities and civilians".

Man on 'eat live rat' charge

A UTAH man is facing animal cruelty charges after a video surfaced showing him eating what appeared to be a live baby rat.

Andy Harris (31) of Tooele, was charged in April after authorities viewed the video on Facebook, which was reported to police by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Harris denies the charge.
