Two people injured after gas explosion in Cork

TWO people were injured in a suspected gas cylinder explosion in Cork.

The incident, which occurred shortly before 11am, ocurred in a retail premises just off the main street of Ballinspittle, between Bandon and Cork city.

Initial reports indicated that two people were on the premises when the explosion occurred.

Both sustained injuries with one, a middle aged man, suffering burn injuries to his torso and face.

However, no further details are available on the nature of their injuries which are understood to have been inflicted by flying debris.

Gardai, Cork fire brigade and Health Service Executive (HSE) ambulances raced to the scene.

Substantial damage is understood to have been caused to the premises involved.

The area was cordoned off pending a full safety check by fire brigade personnel.

A full investigation will now be conducted into the precise cause of the explosion.

Initial reports indicated that the explosion may have occurred as a gas cylinder was being changed.

Locals described hearing a loud bang and the sound of breaking glass.
