Two men are charged over violent death of dad-of-one

two men were today charged in relation to the violent death of a father-of-one in Co Carlow earlier this week.

One of the two accused men replied with the word "guilty" when the charge was put to him by gardaí, a court has heard.

Liam Power (51) of Shaw Park, Carlow and Dzintars Zackalausks (31) of no fixed abode and originally from Latvia, appeared before Carlow District Court this morning.

They were charged with assault causing harm to another Latvian national, father-of-one Gints Intenbergs (41, pictured below).

The body of Mr Intenbergs was found at a house in Graigowen, Tullow, Co Carlow, on the morning of September 16.

The two accused were arrested on Tuesday afternoon and charged on Wednesday night with assault causing harm.

ARRESTED

Detective Sergeant Stephen Delaney told Carlow District Court this morning that he arrested Liam Power and formally charged him at Carlow garda station at 10.19pm on Wednesday.

The accused's reply to the charge was "guilty", Det Sgt Delaney said.

There was no application for bail from solicitor for Mr Power, Joe Farrell, but he did apply for free legal aid and this was granted by Judge Eamon O'Brien.

Superintendent Gerry Redmond applied for the accused to be remanded in custody, to appear again in court at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday. This order was granted by Judge O'Brien.

Detective Garda James Ward said he arrested Dzintars Zackalausks and charged him at 10.24pm on Wednesday.

CHARGED

The accused "made no comment" upon being charged, the court heard.

His solicitor, Brendan O'Flaherty, had no application for bail.

Judge O' Brien made the same orders in relation to Mr Zackalausks, remanding him in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday.
