Trinity College has been named alongside Oxford and Harvard as among the most beautiful college campuses in the world.

The historic Dublin institution made it on to the list of the coolest colleges in the world in the celebrated style bible, House Beautiful, which has eight million social media followers.

Trinity's buildings in the heart of the capital have been used as the setting for many films, most famously Educating Rita, starring Julie Walters and Michael Caine.

Cambridge, Yale and Queen's University in Belfast also made it on to the list of the 30 Most Beautiful College Campuses In The World.

Trinity was lauded for its ancient collection of manuscripts.

"Modelled after the grand collegiate universities of Oxford and Cambridge, Trinity College was founded in 1592 and is one of seven ancient universities of Britain and Ireland," noted House Beautiful.

"The college features 25 different schools, so it makes sense that the library of Trinity College holds more than six million printed volumes of manuscripts, maps and music."

Of Queen's University, House Beautiful said: "This university looks more like a palace fit for Irish royalty than a school for young 20-somethings .

"The Lanyon Building is noted as one of the most recognisable landmarks of Queen's University.

"However, the campus houses more than 250 buildings that resemble this gorgeous gothic and medieval style."

Princeton is described as one of those colleges that gets "better with age".

Oxford University is thought to date back to 1096, making it the oldest college in the English-speaking world.

It was recently ranked first in The Times Higher Education world university rankings.

"As you can imagine, this university's trophy shelf is crowded", said the magazine.

Its rival, Cambridge, has a record-breaking haul of 90 Nobel prizes for its impressive alumni.
