Torrential rain to keep falling up to weekend

Our recent fleeting glimpse of good weather will be completely washed away over the next few days.

Thunderstorms, torrential rain and persistent showers are forecast right up to next weekend.

The only good news is that temperatures will remain very pleasant between 13C and 17C every day.

Today while showers and thunderstorms will hit the west, the rest of the country will enjoy mostly drier weather with sunny spells and light southwesterly winds.

Overnight, unfortunately, this will give way to increasing rain, progressing to heavy, thundery downpours and torrential showers as night approaches.

The deluge continues on Friday in places but there will be longer clear periods and temperatures will drop a little with northerly breezes.

The weekend promises a further easing off of the showers with more dry weather but the temperatures will stay down.
