Tormey is ousted as FG leader on city council

OUTSPOKEN politician Bill Tormey has been ousted as the Fine Gael group leader on Dublin City Council.

Mr Tormey was elected to the position just a year ago but has now been voted out by fellow party members.

Cllr Mary O'Shea has been chosen to succeed him.

It is understood differences between Mr Tormey and a number of other Fine Gael councillors over policy decisions had caused tensions.

Writing on his blog, Mr Tormey said it had been a "privilege" to lead the group, though he sometimes found it an "onerous" task.

He outlined his political principles, stating "Fine Gael in Dublin may be a cold place for social democrats" like himself.

Ms O'Shea told the Herald the vote was an internal matter taken at the group's AGM.

Mr Tormey, who unsuccessfully contested the general election in the Dublin North West constituency, joined Fine Gael in 2004. He had initially been a member of the Labour party and then an independent.
