Top secret wedding for Cumberbatch and sweetheart Sophie
Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch has married theater director Sophie Hunter, choosing to tie the knot in a Valentine's Day ceremony on the Isle of Wight.
Cumberbatch's spokeswoman, Karon Maskill, yesterday confirmed the couple had wed this weekend, surrounded by close family and friends. She described it as a "magical day."
The 38-year-old Cumberbatch rose to prominence with his modern-day portrayal of the cerebral sleuth in Sherlock.
He has been shortlisted for an Oscar for his role as code-breaking genius Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. Turing helped win World War II with his work on cracking Nazi codes, but he was later prosecuted for homosexuality and committed suicide.
Hunter (36) and Cumberbatch appeared together in the 2009 thriller Burlesque Fairytales.
Cumberbatch went to extraordinary lengths to keep his wedding secret, especially from the press and his fans.
Roads around the village of Mottistone were cordoned off, and staff at the hotel where the wedding party celebrated were sworn to secrecy.
It is believed there was a party on Friday night attended by up to 140 guests.
Irish actor Andrew Scott, who played the villain Moriarty in the Sherlock series, was among the 40 or so family and close friends to attend the wedding on Saturday.
Scott has previously joked about his screen relationship with Cumberbatch, reacting to the recent news that he is to become a dad, by joking: "I don't think Benedict will ask me to be a godfather. I'm his arch nemesis."
Others believed to have attended last Saturday's ceremony at the 12th century St Peter and St Paul church included Cumberbatch's War Horse co-star Tom Hiddleston.
