Thugs scorch boy's face with a flaming rope
A 13-YEAR-OLD boy suffered horrific facial injuries after being attacked by teenagers with a burning rope.
Alan Griffin was walking in a park near his Lucan home when he was targeted by the hooded youths in broad daylight.
He received emergency treatment for burns to his face and hands after being singled out by a group of older teens with the flaming nylon rope.
Molten plastic stuck to Alan's face in the brutal and terrifying assault, and when he tried to rub the scalding material from his face it burned his hands.
The schoolboy was walking through Ballyowen Park in Lucan with a friend at 3pm last Monday when the attack happened. He was rushed to Temple Street Children's Hospital for treatment.
"He has a mark going in a line from his eye down his face to his mouth and back up to his nose," Alan's father Paul told the Herald from their Ballyowen home.
"I think he was randomly attacked by people he had no previous association with, but the doctors say these types of attacks are becoming more common," he added. "The rope hit him inches underneath his eye, and he's extremely lucky that they didn't blind him."
Gardai confirmed they are investigating the attack, and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
"It has been alleged that a number of youths were involved in this attack, and we are in the process of gathering suspects," said a spokesperson.
It is believed two youths were involved in the attack. One was described as wearing a pair of three-quarter length denim shorts and a brown top.
Local Fine Gael councillor William Lavelle said anybody who knows anything should contact gardai. "Ballyowen Park is a place for the community to enjoy without fear of being harassed or threatened," he said.
