Three young men were expected to appear at a sitting of the district court in Tullamore today to face charges in connection with the death of Thomas 'Toddy' Dooley in Co Offaly earlier this year.
The body of the 64-year-old was found on a couch in his living room at his home in Sister Senan Court, Edenderry on February 16. Last July, the same three men were arrested and questioned in connection with his death, but were later released without charge.
A post-mortem examination by State pathologist Professor Marie Cassidy concluded that he had died from blunt force trauma after being beaten repeatedly about the head and upper body in his home.
Gardai established that he was battered with a baseball bat and then placed on a chair, with a cushion over his bloodspattered head and set on fire. Officers said it was not clear whether Mr Dooley was still alive when the blaze was started.
Shocked neighbours said they were stunned to hear of father-of-three Dooley's death.
