THE successful Ballyumun Market should be relocated elsewhere once the shopping centre is vacated, local councillors have urged.

Discussions are currently under way with the remaining tenants with a view to offering some alternative accommodation.

Dublin city council has said they hope to have the shopping centre vacated by Christmas.

Sinn Féin Councillor Noeleen Reilly said the Ballymun Market runs every Thursday and the first Tuesday of every month and has brought a lot of people into the area.

"The market originally operated on the Plaza but a number of years ago moved into the Shopping Centre," she said.

"With plans under way to close the shopping centre, we need to make sure the market is kept open. The market contributes greatly to the local economy and it must be protected."
