Terror as gunman opens fire on man at his front door

A DUBLIN man in his 50s has been shot at his home in Greystones Co Wicklow in what gardai suspect is a case of mistaken identity.

The victim, named locally as Rupert Stanley, was targeted by two men who called to the door of his bungalow at Redford Park just before 10pm last night.

He was hit in the abdomen and arm in the attack which has shocked the residents of the quiet cul de sac.

They reported hearing two loud bangs and then seeing the victim's distressed wife Angela helping him after the men drove away from the scene.

Senior sources say they do not yet know why Mr Stanley, known locally as Ruby, was shot.

"There is no known reason why this man should be targeted in this way," they said.

"The investigation is at an early stage but we cannot rule out mistaken identity."

Neighbours said Mr Stanley and his wife had moved to Greystones around two years ago.

"They are a lovely couple and they had done a great job doing up their house," said one local woman.

"I heard two bangs last night at around 10pm and that must have been the shots," she added.

Another neighbour also reported hearing two loud noises.

"I didn't know what it was so I didn't pay much heed, but then I saw the blue lights of the ambulance and the gardai.

"When I looked up the road I could see the man's wife helping him," they said

"There's no reason why anybody on this road would be shot and that's what makes it so frightening, to think an innocent person could be fired at," they added.

This is the second suspected case of a mistaken shooting of a man since Sunday when Walkinstown man Edward Nugent was shot dead at his home on Harty Avenue.

At the scene in Greystones today, gardai placed plastic covers over spent shells from the weapon used to shoot the victim as a forensic examination of the scene got underway.

The front window of the house was also shattered in the attack.

Mr Stanley is described as being in a stable condition in St Vincent's Hospital.
