Terenure residents welcome new Lidl

TERENURE residents may want to be moved to a more middle-class Dail constituency -- but would welcome a discount supermarket.

An application from Lidl for a new store in the southside village is expected to receive the backing of shoppers, a residents' spokesman said.

Families last month demanded the entire village be represented by the more "middle-class" Dublin South-East constituency.

But they wouldn't be offended by a branch of the bargain retailer being located at the former offices of the Sunday World newspaper, according to locals.

"I'm sure it will be generally welcomed by the community," Rossa O'Donovan of the Terenure West Residents' Association told the Herald.

He said the site at 18 Rathfarnham Road and Beechlawn Way has not been used for some years.

He added: "If there is interest by the supermarket it would be good for business in Terenure.

"My own view is that it would be pretty welcome by the business community and it would bring additional shoppers into the area."
