A teenager tried to return a jacket which she had picked up off a hanger in a department store and get a refund, a court heard.

Sarah Jane McCay (19) was stopped by shop staff when she tried to complete the transaction at the customer service desk.

Judge David Waters fined her €200.

The defendant, who is living in a hostel, went into Penneys on Dublin's O'Connell Street on June 21 with a receipt for €14.

Sgt Niall Gillooly said the defendant took a jacket off a hanger and went up to the customer service desk and attempted to return it.

Expecting

Sgt Gillooly said McCay was stopped by security staff and there was no loss to the store.

Dublin District Court heard the defendant has no previous convictions.

Defence solicitor Declan Fahy said she was living with her boyfriend in hostel accommodation.

He said McCay was expecting a baby next year.

Mr Fahy said McCay "fell into the situation", but she accepted what she did was wrong and wished to apologise for her behaviour.

She is unemployed and on social welfare, the court heard.
