Luke -- who is well known to gardai -- is the nephew of Ireland's most notorious band of gangland brothers.
Along with his uncle who was shot dead last September, he has two uncles, Eric and Keith, who are convicted murderers. Both are in prison.
The injured teenager was raised at their family home in Cremona Road, Ballyfermot, by his grandmother Kathleen Wilson after the tragic death of his own mum, Debbie.
Sources say that his relationship with the notorious gangster brothers was "akin to him being their brother and he idolised them".
This loyalty is the chief reason why he was almost shot dead yesterday, according to sources.
"There was a serious incident at a pub in Ballyfermot on Sunday night of last week where Luke had been socialising with other young fellas.
"An individual who Luke would have previously been on friendly terms with started slagging Luke's uncle John.
"He was calling John 'a rat, a fool and a nobody' and stuff like that. This individual then received a savage beating because of what he was saying.
"No official complaint was made to gardai by the injured party. Yesterday's gun attack has all the hallmarks of revenge for the pub beating," a senior source explained.
Sources say the reason gardai are so confident of the motive in this case is the arrest of a 19-year-old Ballyfermot man close to the scene of the shooting yesterday evening. He is best friends with the pub-attack victim.
This teenager is being questioned at Kilmainham Garda Station today and is the chief suspect for being the gunman.
The pub-beating victim is not known to have been at the scene of the incident at the Memorial Park and is not known to have any involvement in it.
He was previously arrested last year in relation to a bizarre firearms incident in a different Ballyfermot pub.
Despite his young age, Luke has been involved in a number of violent incidents in the Ballyfermot area.
In one incident in July, he was arrested by local gardai after they came across him involved in a brutal brawl on the Ballyfermot Road but he was later released without charge.
This led to a number of tit-for-tat incidents inthe Ballyfermot area. The July brawl is not linked to yesterday's shooting and gardai have also ruled out any dissident Republican involvement.
Luke Wilson's uncle Eric is serving a 23-year sentence in Spain for murder while another uncle, Keith, is serving a life sentence for a 2010 Finglas gangland murder.
