Teenage fruit burglar jailed

A TEENAGE boy, who burgled businesses based in the Dublin Corporation Fruit Market, has had a five-month custodial sentence activated at the Children's Court.

The north inner-city Dublin boy (17) had admitted the offence which happened on June 15 last year. On November 10 last, he had been given a five-month sentence which was suspended on condition he did not reoffend for one year.

Judge Bryan Smyth had said the fruit market, in Smithfield, was "struggling" and "they are crimes against your own community, that makes it worse".



AOL enlist help for culinary site

AOL is counting on celebrity chefs and instructors from a top culinary school to get Americans cooking -- and clicking.

The company, already home to the culinary blog slashfood.com, has launched the new KitchenDaily.com, a star-powered site focused on cooking basics.

To get its site off the ground, AOL recruited columnist and author Mark Bittman, award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson and Top Chef judge Gail Simmons.



€13m pledged to assist Haiti

The Government today revealed plans to pledge a total of €13m towards rebuilding Haiti after the devastating earthquake.

Peter Power, Minister of State for Overseas Development, said the donation would be paid out over three years to support the Haitian recovery plan.

He will announce the donation by taxpayers, through Irish Aid, at a UN conference in New York chaired by UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.



Top long-haul airlines named

Singapore Airlines has topped an Australian survey as the best airline to fly with internationally, while British Airways trailed with the lowest satisfaction rating for flights from Australia to Britain.

About 9,000 members of Choice, a consumer advice organisation, were asked to rate their satisfaction on recent international flights on cost, in-flight service, seat comfort, leg room, timeliness, food quality and check-in process.
