Teen sentenced for gang attack

A SECOND Dublin youth has been given a custodial sentence for his role in a gang attack and robbery of a fast-food delivery man who was dragged away from his car and viciously beaten.

The 17-year-old boy pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and robbery of the man during the incident in Tallaght on April 14 last. The court had heard he had no prior criminal convictions. The boy was given a five-month sentence and, at the end of the hearing, turned to his mother to tell her, "give me some fags".

Murdoch joins Google case

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp has joined the fray in Google's protracted European antitrust case, saying the company unfairly distorts competition.

Robert Thomson, CEO of New York-based News Corp, said in a letter to the EU's antitrust authority that Google is "willing to exploit its dominant market position to stifle competition".

Mr Thomson welcomed the EU's decision to demand stronger concessions from Google to reach a settlement in the case.

Toronto mayor to get chemo

Toronto mayor Rob Ford will undergo 40 days of chemotherapy to treat a rare and difficult-to-beat cancer that forced him to do what months of scandals over drug and alcohol abuse could not - drop his bid for re-election.

Dr Zane Cohen, a colorectal surgeon at Mount Sinai hospital, said Mr Ford has a malignant liposarcoma.

Mr Ford announced that he was pulling out of the October 27 race and his brother Doug would run in his place.

Mr Ford has been engulfed in controversy since reports of the existence of a video apparently showing the mayor inhaling from a crack pipe.

Women now top UK gamers

Women have overtaken men as the most prolific gamers in Britain, according to a new report.

The Internet Advertising Bureau UK said the change has been driven by 25 to 44-year-old women downloading puzzle and trivia game apps on their mobiles and tablets. Steve Chester, a director at the bureau, said: "Internet and mobile devices have changed the gaming landscape forever."
