Gardaí investigating an allegation of serious sexual assault on a teenage girl at a playground in Charlestown, Co Mayo, have spoken with a teenage boy in relation to the incident.

The 15-year-old girl was in the company of a small group of friends on Saturday afternoon when they were approached by three young males who had travelled to Charlestown from another town in south Mayo.

It is understood the two groups were not known to each other beyond limited contact on social media before Saturday.

The young girl is said to be deeply traumatised but both she and her friends are expected to give a full statement to gardaí in the coming days.

Gardaí have not yet made an arrest but a source confirmed they have spoken with one young male who is the focus of the investigation.

The alleged attack is reported to have happened at a playground in the Lowpark area.

Witnesses are believed to have been able to give gardaí a clear description of a black car seen in the area at the time.

Garda forensic investigators carried out an examination at the playground and the neighbouring car park.

Yesterday detectives carried out door-to-door enquiries in the town and canvassed CCTV footage from local businesses.

Local people are said to be "deeply shocked and angry", with one local describing the attitude in the town as one of "collective horror".

"It is just the last news you expect to hear. Everyone is very upset," they said.

"It's very hard to know what to say but it's a terrible situation for the girl and her friends.

"They are all good friends since childhood and they are a lovely group of girls so it's just awful. We are praying for them and their parents."

Hospital

It is understood the girl was treated in hospital but has now returned to her family.

Gardaí from Claremorris are leading the investigation and issued an appeal for information.

"Anyone with information, particularly anyone who was in the vicinity of the Square and/or Lowpark areas of Charlestown between 2pm and 8pm (on Saturday, September 26, 2020) is asked to contact gardaí in Claremorris on 094 937 2080 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
