Teen on witness threat charge

A youth has been remanded in custody after he was charged with witness intimidation.

The boy, aged 17, was arrested and brought before the Dublin Children's Court charged with two counts of threatening, intimidating and putting a man, who was a witness, in fear, with intent of causing justice to be obstructed, in Crumlin, in Dublin, on March 5 and 6 last.

Defence solicitor Gareth Noble said the teen denies the allegations. Judge Clare Leonard remanded the teen in custody to appear again on Friday next for a bail hearing.



Global forum for young Irish

The Government is planning a Global Irish Economic Forum for younger people later this year, it was confirmed today.

The event will see up to 100 younger members of the Irish diaspora coming together for a think-in similar to last year's talks at Farmleigh in Dublin.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the forum will take place at the same venue in Phoenix Park in June.



No verdict in sex-attack trial

A jury in the Central Criminal Court trial of a Mayo man accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting two children in the pub where he worked as a barman has been discharged after failing to reach a verdict.

The 39-year-old man, who can not be named for legal reasons, had pleaded not guilty to charges including sexual assault and oral rape on dates between June 1999 and September 2000. The judge remanded the accused on continuing bail and listed the case for mention next month.



US senator in gay admission

A California state senator who staunchly opposed homosexual rights now says he is gay, ending days of speculation that began after his arrest last week for investigation of driving under the influence.

Roy Ashburn, a conservative Republican, came out in an interview with Kern radio. Mr Ashburn said he felt compelled to address rumours that he had visited a gay nightclub near the Capitol before his drunken driving arrest. "I am gay ... those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long," he said.
