Taximan accused of assault on woman

A TAXI driver accused of seriously assaulting a woman in a pub has been sent forward for trial.

Lee Ryan (36) has been ordered to stay away from the alleged victim and out of the Brookview estate in Tallaght, except in the course of his work. He is facing trial by judge and jury in the Circuit Court after it was ruled the matter was too serious for the District Court.

The defendant, with an address at Rossberry Terrace in Lucan, appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with seriously assaulting a woman at Molly Heffernan's pub, Fortunestown Way in Tallaght on June 12 last.

A State solicitor said the book of evidence was ready and had been served on Ryan who goes forward to the next sittings of Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

The court heard that Ryan works as a taxi driver and defence solicitor Padraig O'Donovan and one junior counsel were assigned on free legal aid.

Judge James McDonnell gave Ryan the alibi caution, warning him he had 14 days to provide to the State details of anyone he proposed calling as a witness in the case. The judge remanded Ryan on continuing bail in his own bond of €500, ordered him to stay away from the alleged victim and out of the Brookview estate.
