'Swot' Miriam putting no pressure on daughters as Leaving Cert kicks off
HER twin daughters; Georgia and Jessica McGurk have just begun their Leaving Cert exams but self-proclaimed "swot" Miriam O'Callaghan insists she won't be putting any pressure on them to be top of the class.
The down-to-earth RTE star (50) told the Herald how she has every confidence that her ambitious girls' will ace the State exams, but admits that if they don't succeed first time around she won't be upset.
Miriam's 18-year-old daughters are both students at Alexandra College and already did the mum-of-eight proud this year when they helped their team win the U-19 Schools' Cup Final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
"They're both quite relaxed, which I'm glad about as I think there's too much fuss around the Leaving Cert," Miriam explained.
"They've done the work, they've been studying since September, so if there is a god then they should sail through them.
"Now it's time to chill out. It's just an exam at the end of the day. It puts too much stress on young people.
"I was a terrible swot myself and even to this day when I'm going into the studio to interview the Taoiseach I'll think, 'Oh God I can't remember a thing' but, funnily, when that red light comes on it all comes back to you."
The popular RTE star is due to return to the small screen this Saturday night with another series of her chat show, Saturday Night With Miriam.
The glamorous blonde says she's looking forward to picking out her outfit for the debut show of the season, which will see a variety of guests from all walks of life join her on the couch.
Miriam admits that she's looking forward to doing something different after a hectic few months on RTE current affairs show Prime Time, which saw her cover everything from the General Election to Queen Elizabeth and US President Barack Obama's recent Irish visits.
"I haven't even had time to think about it much yet as it's been so hectic lately," she said.
