SuperValu close to toppling Tesco

SUPERMARKETS

Supervalu has almost replaced Tesco as the country's largest supermarket chain.

The gap in market share between the two retailers is now just 0.4pc after Tesco saw its share of the market fall by 5.5pc in recent weeks to just 25.4pc.

SuperValu, which now includes rebranded Superquinn stores, has 25pc of the market.

The latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland show food and drink prices rising at the slowest levels in more than two years. Grocery prices are now increasing 1.5pc.

Both Lidl and Aldi continue to gain market share.

Lidl's share of the market is now at 8.5pc while Aldi's share stands at 8.4pc.
