Superjumbo is back in the air

Qantas said it will resume A380 flights from Australia to Los Angeles this weekend after a more than two-month stoppage because of engine problems.

The flights to the US West Coast have been grounded since an engine on one of the airline's superjumbo jets disintegrated shortly after the plane took off from Singapore on November 4, 2010.

Qantas said it was satisfied with the safety of the A380 engines following extensive engineering analysis and consultation with engine makers Rolls Royce.



Whale teeth dealer jailed

A Ukrainian man has been sentenced in US federal court in Massachusetts after admitting to a plot to smuggle sperm whale ivory into and out of the United States.

Andriy Mikhalyov (39), of Odessa, Ukraine, pleaded guilty to conspiring to buy, sell and smuggle sperm whale teeth.

He was sentenced to time incarcerated since his arrest, a period of more than nine months.



Motown stars honour Teena

Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, Shanice Wilson and Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr are among the luminaries who honoured singer Teena Marie at a private memorial service.

Marie, born Mary Christine Brockert, died on December 27 at the age 54. Police have said she died of natural causes.
