It has been the sunniest winter on record at Dublin Airport, according to Met Eireann.

Temperatures exceeded previous records by over 15 hours of sunshine, with records beginning 73 years ago, according to the winter report from the airport.

It found that winter air temperatures were below average nearly everywhere.

Meanwhile forecaster Eoin Sherlock said that there will be an improved situation on the weather front compared to the last few days.

"It will be relatively dry for the next couple of days," he said about the eastern region.

"Temperatures today will still be a bit low for the time of year at around 7 or 8 degrees, but the dry weather will continue on Wednesday night in the east."

He said that there is a lot of dry weather on the horizon.

RISING

Day time temperatures do start to pick up over the coming days, rising to 12C on Saturday, but back to 11 C on Sunday.

"Those temperatures would be a degree or so above the average for March," he said.

The rest of the country will also see an improvement, although it may be a bit slower in parts of the west and the north.
